Meet The Team

𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭 - 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐷𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟

Johan is the Voetspore Team leader. This is his 16th Voetspore adventure since 2000. Covering more than 250 000 kilometres and visiting 40 countries in Africa makes him one of the most well-travelled modern-day explorers of the continent.

In 2017 the team ventured further abroad to India with it‘s incredible diversity, but in 2019 and 2020 Johan brought Voetspore home to showcase SA’s unique beauty and hidden gems. In 2021 the journey continued following the Zambezi from Source to Sea. Now it is time for a new continent – South America. It will be an expedition, done in two legs – first the south, then the north.

Johan is married to Alma and lives in Kleinmond in the Western Cape.

Gideon is a Voetspore veteran. He was there from the beginning. At first, he acted as a sound engineer, but over the years migrated to behind the lens of the still's camera, where his natural talent is highlighted. It is especially his star trails that catch the eye. Of this, we hope to see a lot of the vast open skies of South America. He has been the photographic contributor to numerous Voetspore travel guides. This will be Gideon’s 11th Voetspore journey.

Gideon lives in Pretoria.

The Route

South America is a vast continent. It will take more than a lifetime to explore the whole continent.

Voetspore decided to do it in two legs, using Uruguay as a base.

In 2022 the Voetspore Land Cruisers will be shipped from Durban to Montevideo where the journey will start.

At first, the southern countries Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina will be visited.

In 2023 we hope to return to travel through Brazil, French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

The 2022 Route:

Uruguay.

Montevideo is the most convenient port to use in South America. It is also the country where foreign-registered vehicles can stay for longer than three months on a Temporary Import Permit. The team will visit the capital, Colonia del Sacramento and Punto del Este, and will then head north for a brief visit to Argentina and the Iguazu Falls.

Paraguay

This land-locked country is home to a large farming community. Many emigrated from all over the world, even South Africa, to apply their trade to the rich, fertile soil of Paraguay. The team will visit the capital, Asunción, and observe the massive hydroelectrical plant on the second largest dam in the world, Itapúa. This is on the Rio Parana.

Bolivia

The team will spend a few weeks in Bolivia, visiting the place where revolutionary icon, Che Guevara died, as well as Santa Cruz and Rurrenabaque in the Amazonian Basin. Then we will head into the Andes for a visit to the capital La Paz, the Salt Flats, the Most Dangerous Road in the World, and Lake Titicaca.

Chile

The visit to Chile will start at the driest desert in the world, the Atacama. From there we will head south to Santiago and the wine region of Chile, and then to the Lake District and the Torres del Paine with its soaring mountains, bright blue icebergs that cleave from glaciers and golden pampas that shelter rare wildlife such as llama-like guanacos. The Chilean excursion will end at the Straights of Magellan.

Argentina

The Argentinian adventure starts at the southernmost city in the world – Ushuaia. From there it is a journey north, past Patagonia and Puerto Madryn, en route to Buenos Aires. We hope to meet the Afrikaners who emigrated to Argentina after the Anglo Boer War as well as the South American cowboys, the gauchos, and share a proper asado (Argentinian braai) with them.

After three months we will return to Montevideo, leave our vehicles, and return to South Africa for a few months, before the start of the second leg of the South American excursion.
